A 6-month-old child is dead after two teenagers speeding and joyriding in a stolen car caused a crash in Chicago, WGN-TV reports.
Around 5 p.m. Sunday, the two male juveniles – 14 and 17 years old – were traveling westbound in the 4400 block of West Washington Boulevard when their stolen Hyundai hit a pickup truck.
The incident occurred west of downtown near Garfield Park, with both vehicles ending up on a sidewalk and the truck ramming into a tree. A mother and three children, including 6-month-old Cristian Uvidia, were inside the truck.
Shaun Walker, who lives near the scene, told CBS Chicago that his home security camera recorded the crash.
“At this point I found out there was a baby in the vehicle,” Walker told CBS Chicago. “The baby was not breathing. We started immediately CPR on the baby, and we were waiting on the ambulance. We were able to get the breath back into the baby.”
Cristian died from injuries inflicted in the wreck. He had a skull fracture and brain swelling, according to the family. The boy’s mother and two older sisters also have been hospitalized, although they are expected to make a full recovery.
A GoFundMe page is raising money to help the family pay for medical expenses and the boy’s funeral.
“We are devastated, and we are broken. We will miss his sweet smile, as he was a joy to everyone that he met,” the GoFundMe page reads, adding: “Earth lost a beautiful baby boy, but heaven gained its most beautiful angel.”
Annelisse Rivera, the boy’s aunt, said that the circumstances of her nephew’s death are particularly tragic.
“Our lives were impacted completely forever. The joy of our life was taken. His life was priceless,” Rivera told CBS Chicago. “The fact that his life was taken in one second for somebody that was like looking for a stolen car as if his life amounted to a price of a car.”
The teens, whose identities have not been released publicly, presently each face one misdemeanor count of criminal trespassing. They could face upgraded charges depending on the outcome of the police investigation.
